Talking about mobile app stores, until now, we only have two choices. Android users are only provided with the option of the Play Store, while Apple offers only the App Store as the sole option.
Practices like these are often considered as monopolistic by various parties. Moreover, these platform providers also impose a 30% fee on developers per transaction. This has irked several parties, including Tim Sweeney from Epic Games.
It seems that this is about to change as the Japanese government (reported by Nikkei via Gamesfray) is in the process of designing new regulations to address the existing monopoly issues in mobile app stores.
The draft of this new law will be submitted to the Diet at some point in 2024, and its contents include:
The government will prevent companies providing smartphone operating systems from monopolizing the operation of app stores and payment systems, and will encourage competition with other companies in the provision of applications and payment infrastructure.
If this law successfully passes, the responsibility for enforcement will be handed over to the Japanese trade commission. However, what are the implications for users if this new legislation comes into effect?
It seems that Google and Apple may be compelled to open their platforms to provide more third-party app stores. Similar efforts are also underway in the U.S., with Google losing to Epic Games and having to facilitate easier sideloading access for apps and support for third-party payments.
On the other hand, Apple is grappling with the European Union, where the new law mandates sideloading on iOS through the Digital Markets Act (DMA). Clearly, the Cupertino-based company must enable sideloading on iPhones at least before the DMA deadline on March 4, 2024.
What are your thoughts on this? Do you think this enforcement is beneficial for us as users? Or does it potentially compromise the security of a system like the iOS App Store?
